Honesty and Integrity
During this project, I endeavoured to upload these values by communicating respectfully and acting reliably with members of my team and other teams. This includes ensuring that I will respect their privacy (for example, when they do not wish to disclose certain features of their mouse to me or when there are issues the team resolves internally).
Respect for life, the law, the environment and the public interest
This project’s construction required consideration of various hazards (e.g., soldering irons for building PCB circuits and soldering ultrasonic sensors). To ensure my safety and the safety of others, I followed the lab code of prioritising the health and safety of others and drawing attention to hazards. In addition, when constructing PCBs, as we want to maximise the use of the PCB area, we design double-sided boards to maximise the design as much as possible and to help protect the environment both now and in the future.
Accuracy and Rigour
To further ensure that the lab is safe and operated correctly, as we are students and still learning, all physical work (e.g. soldering/drilling) is done under the appropriate guidance of lab staff or academics, always proceeding with caution, which is not only helps to minimise the risk of harm to the users of the lab space but also learns knowledge and skills.
Leadership and Communication
As a member of the team, I do my best to complete the tasks assigned by the leader, ideally stating the team’s tasks professionally with objective and truthful suggestions and ideas through the skills I have learnt. Listening to the team/other teams helps in better communication and problem solving.
In the IET’s rules of conduct, rule 10 mentions that members should report to the employer when they recognise any suspected misconduct or danger related to their professional activities. When our team members display inappropriate behaviour, I feel that we need to communicate internally first. If there is no reasonable outcome, we can discuss it with the lab instructor, which not only won’t break the team’s cohesion but will also make the team’s communication smoother.
The Markkula Center for Applied Ethics was chosen as a recommended resource, partly when support and guidance in ethical decision-making are needed. Not only does this Centre have a deep academic research base, but the practical applications and consulting services it provides are also very helpful in addressing real-life ethical issues. On the other hand, the Centre’s multi-disciplinary coverage (including business, bio, internet, government and engineering ethics) makes it a comprehensive ethical resource capable of providing expert ethical guidance for a wide range of complex scenarios.
