Committing to the Ethical Principles is an important aspect in engineering so that all engineering applications have a positive effect on the world. It is crucial that everyone involved in engineering understands the 4 key ethics highlighted by the Royal Academy of Engineering.

The first ethic is Honesty and Integrity. Honestly forms the foundation for ethical engineering. As a student, I will make sure all work is my own original work, use proper citation and be involved in ethical collaboration.

The second ethic is Respect for Life, Law, and the Public Good. Engineering should focus on sustainability, social and safety benefits. As a student, I am to follow and understand the legal aspects, including health and safety.

The third ethic is Accuracy and Rigor. Having precise and well evaluated analysis is very important throughout my degree and beyond. As an engineer, we should focus on accuracy in problem-solving, Reseach and experimentation, and use analysis to make sure my results are reliable and efficient.

The fourth and final ethic is Leadership and Communication. As a student, I will participate in teamwork, respect everyone’s opinions and make ethical decisions. Throughout my career as an engineer, I will communicate clearly and honestly with everyone in the workforce, keeping to the expected ethical standards.

As a group, we have demonstrated ethics throughout our project. We have considered everyone’s opinions and ideas, tried to be sustainable as possible by reducing our materials waste, and have all communicated our ideas and objects to lab session efficiently.

One useful resource on engineering ethics is the National Society of Professional Engineers Ethics Reference Guide (https://www.nspe.org/resources/ethics), which highlights the use of engineering ethics in case studies and review board opinions. This source is useful as it provides real-life applications of engineering ethics.

To conclude, ethical responsibility can be used in my academic and future development in engineering. By reviewing these ethics, I will aim to contribute in a way that is safe, and innovative, and will commit to continuously learning about these engineering ethics.
