Stephen. Kelly December blog on Ethical Principles

When looking at the Statement of Ethical Principles The four ethical pillars form the bedrock for engineers to build upon, creating a foundation of trust and principled behavior. Honesty and integrity are the cornerstones, emphasizing reliability, privacy respect, and a clear stance against bribery. Engineers commit to respecting life, law, and the environment, prioritizing safety, upholding laws, and maximizing public good. Accuracy and rigor ensure a solid knowledge base, while leadership and communication promote equality and public awareness. Together, these principles shape an engineering profession that not only excels technically but also stands as a beacon of ethical fortitude.

The Institution of Engineering and Technology (IET) outlines 36 rules of conduct from this list I have selected three rules are key to guiding its members toward responsible practices. Firstly, members are obligated to keep their knowledge current, fostering continuous professional development and ensuring competence I believe this apply to students as we are at the forefront of being taught engineering at a university level. Secondly, the emphasis on reporting wrongdoing and dangers underscores the commitment to accountability and safety again as working in labs its key this is carried out for the safety of every pupil and teacher in the class as well as been working in an engineering background, I’ve seen the dangers this can cause if not followed.  finally, members shall take all reasonable steps to avoid waste of natural resources, damage to the environment, and damage or destruction of man-made products. Lawful work undertaken by members in connection with equipment intended for the defense of a nation will not infringe this Rule 15 or Rule 14. this is a key issue with the outer world with waste being looked at and best way to reduce as much as you can. These rules collectively shape a community of engineers dedicated to excellence, transparency, and ethical behavior.

When looking at my own research one page i found most interesting was the IEEE’s code of ethics they have 3 key areas first To uphold the highest standards of integrity, responsible behavior, and ethical conduct in professional activities. secondly To treat all persons fairly and with respect, to not engage in harassment or discrimination, and to avoid injuring others. To strive to ensure this code is upheld by colleagues and co-workers. this then go into there own points to see them you could go to https://www.ieee.org/about/corporate/governance/p7-8.htmlIEEE – IEEE Code of Ethics
