It was determined early on that the addition of ultrasonic sensors would provide a definite

advantage to our micromouse in combat due to the sensors ability to not only detect

obstacles but also judge the distance between the obstacle and the micromouse. Therefore,

the micromouse can act differently depending on the calculated distance (such as reversing

suddenly if an obstacle suddenly appears in front of the sensor). Another reason for

implementation was ease of integration with the micromouse as the sensors have only 4

pins (Vcc, GND, Echo and Trigger).

We used two HCSR04 ultrasonic sensors and tested them on a breadboard before soldering

onto a breakout board. The board was then attached to the underside of the PC (as can be

seen in the photo).
