Engineers are one of the most respected professions today. As an aspiring Engineer I recognise the responsibility this  status comes with. After reflecting on the principles highlighted by the Royal Academy of engineering and Engineering Council I’m committed into integrating them into my Engineering journey.

The first quality mentioned in the article is Honest and Integrity. As an Engineering student I will uphold this by ensuring that all the reports, assignments and any exercises are done as instructed without any form of deception and plagiarism. Before any task is undertaken, I will declare any conflict of interests which might bias my opinion on any given topic. Maintaining integrity will help my colleagues and teammates build trust and credibility in me which will in turn raise the ethical standards of the profession.

As an engineering student understand how engineering has a profound impact on our society therefore respect for life, law environment and public good is a principle that I will crucially consider. As such I will prioritize public safety by ensuring accuracy and researching all the mitigating risks of every project and research that I will undertake. This will ensure that the public’s trust is at the heart of engineering.

Engineers often make decisions that affect the society. Therefore, having good leadership and communication skills is vital. As an Engineering student I will improve these two vital skills by engaging with my course mates and participating in ethical discussions. I also understand the importance of diversity in Engineering. Working as a diverse team means all the communities are represented therefore, we better understand the perspective and the impact our work has on every member of the community.

Engineering is not all just about being good enough to solve problems it also requires a strong ethical foundation. As a student and future engineer i commit to honesty , respect for society , accuracy and leadership as mentioned in Royal Academy of engineering and Engineering Council article. I commit to contribute to a profession that is trusted , respected and commits to the well being for all members of the community from every background.
