In my perspective, the ethical principles are key to ensuring that professionals uphold integrity, accuracy, and respect for life, law, and the environment, they are necessary in engineering to display reliability, competency and accountability with their own work, hence referencing high quality work in ethical ways. As a student, I pride myself in my own work and my learning journey, it is in my best interest and I have the highest regard for honest work and my own designs to be done at the highest standard, which is why I always double check my work and keep track of my progress to prevent any errors or unaccounted surprises. These values are aligned with the Royal Academy of Engineering (RAEng) and Engineering Council’s (EC) ethical codes, as I stated, their ethics emphasize reliability, competence, and accountability. For more ethical conduct, the Institution of Engineering and Technology (IET) also transmits the need for engineer to commit to ethical conduct in every single aspect of their work, hence reinforcing my responsibility as a student and as a future engineer to act responsibly in both my education and my future profession as I represent an engineer to society.
Excluding technical and experimental knowledge, communication is an area I need a bit of improvement in, I am a decent leader and do well in collaboration and teamwork, but I do recognize that sometimes I could do better in communication skills to better engage with my peers and in future prospects. My experience in university projects has shown me the importance of decision making and the ethical viewpoints when designing and creating experiments. In the future, I will continue to develop and uphold the ethical principles to demonstrate an engineer’s trustworthiness and integrity.
The link below is for MFS Engineers and Surveyors which also reinforce the code of ethics for engineers. This comprehensive document outlines the fundamental principles that guide ethical engineering practices. It’s there as a reference to understand the professional responsibilities of engineers, and they do this by emphasizing the importance of public safety, integrity, and professional competence.
