Personal Statement of Commitment to Ethical Principles
As a student and aspiring engineer, I am deeply committed to the ethical principles outlined by the Royal Academy of Engineering (RAE) and the Engineering Council (EC). In my current project, where my role as a webmaster is critical in constructing a micromouse, I recognize the importance of upholding honesty and integrity in all our work. This means being transparent about our progress, respecting the contributions of my team members, and guaranteeing that our website accurately represents our project.
Sticking to ethical rules in engineering is salient for keeping our career field healthy and making sure society is doing well. The RAE/EC Ethical Principles say engineers need to respect life, the law, and nature (Statement of ethical principles, n.d.). I want to make sure our project follows all the important laws and thinks about how it will affect the environment. When we design and build the micromouse, we have to carefully choose the materials and try to reduce waste.
When I become an engineer, I will keep making these ethical standards a top priority. The guidance from the IET on Professionalism and Ethics in Engineering accentuates that each individual has to be accountable for what they do (Professionalism and ethics in engineering, n.d.). I understand there will be ethical dilemmas about the right thing to do in my job, and I promise to face those situations honestly and justly.
To further my understanding of engineering ethics, I find the textbook Ethics in Engineering valuable. It not only presents key ethical issues but also provides case studies that illustrate the practical implications of ethical decision-making in engineering (Zhu et al., 2022). When engaging with such resources, I aim to build a strong foundation in ethics that will guide my professional practice.
In summary, I am completely dedicated to these moral rules, and I am excited to help create a future where engineering is seen as an honest and principled career. I think that if engineers stick to these guidelines, they can have a good effect on the world. As I continue my studies and enter the workforce, I will always make ethics the top priority in what I do.
