My Commitment to Maintaining a High Standard of Ethics
Maintaining a high code of ethics is very important in engineering due to the impacts that it can have on society as a whole. It is vital that engineers keep themselves highly honest and with a great deal of integrity. Breaking this can lead to doubt and mistrust of engineers leading to a fall in public trust of the profession. This leads to maintaining a healthy respect for our fellow man and the environments that we work in. Being able to keep a high level of mutual respect with the law and humanity allows us as engineers to continue to push the bounds of what is possible. While doing this, it is vital to make sure that we look after the world we are changing, so that future generations still have a healthy planet to live on. Being able to deliver quality products in a good time frame while holding onto a high safety level is also very important. Without this, engineers will fall out of favour and lose our place in the worlds advancement.
While all this is nice for maintaining external communication, it is important to have a strong leadership within engineering so that we can lift up other engineers pushing each other further. Everyone deserves a place in engineering, and it is the leader’s responsibility to ensure that everyone that puts in the work is given proper opportunity and support. Being able to effectively communicate within an engineering team to vital to be able to maintain this level of inclusion and support.
It is important as members of the IET that we follow their clear code of conduct. This is to ensure that while it enables us to maintain a membership, it also means that other people will not treat others unfairly due to themselves also being held accountable. As the employer, or client, is also responsible for following these rules, even if not strictly being a member, it means everyone involved is held accountable. If any party breaks this code of conduct, it can be noted so that future employees or employers and clients, know what they are getting into, should they decide to work with someone that is known to have broken the code of conduct for the IET.
