The four ethical principles are the backbone to professionalism in engineering as we know it. They display the codes of conduct necessary for a safe, ethical and social environment which builds a level of trust in the workplace.

  1. Honesty and Integrity

Engineering is all about trusting in your ability and your peers. Upholding the highest standard of thoroughness is very important in a serious profession as engineering considering that your actions impact many people. Respecting confidentiality and acting responsibly is also a good basis for any engineer, making sure that every task gets done safely and competently without cutting any corners.

  1. Respect for life, law, the environment and public good

Public and environmental safety is one of the most difficult points to balance as an engineer. Making sure that all the work you do is justified and does not adversely affect the environment even if the benefit to the public is great and visa versa. Taking into accounts the limited availability of natural resources, we as engineers need to respect and protect the natural environment to the best of our ability.

  1. Accuracy and Rigour

It is very important for an engineer to accomplish tasks to the highest degree of accuracy for the health and safety of the public and the environment. Being able accurately assess the risk involved in a task as well as understanding and accepting that you might not be competent enough for every task is a great mindset to have as an engineer.

  1. Leadership and Communication

Working as a team is a massive part of engineering considering that most of the work you do will be in a team of specialists. I will learn a great deal from my peers and pass on that knowledge to the next generation as it is our duty as engineers to promote equality, diversity and inclusion as well as promoting ourselves and our achievements.

In the professional world of engineering, ethics are tantamount to life and because of this I will uphold these values to the best of my ability using the code of ethic as guidance. https://www.ieee.org/about/corporate/governance/p7-8.html. I have provided this as my resource on ethics because I like what the enthesis it puts of health and safety and fairness.
