Ben’s Statement…
As a student of the Institution of Engineering and Technology and an aspiring professional engineer, I am deeply committed to upholding to the ethical principles that were outlined in the Statement of Ethical Principles issued by the Royal Academy of Engineering and the Engineering Council . The principles that have been revised in 2017, serve as a foundational guide for engineers to ensure that their work benefits society, respects the environment, and maintains high standards of integrity and professionalism.
The RAE/EC Ethical Principles emphasise four key values: Accuracy and Rigour, Honesty and integrity, Respect for Life, Law, and the Environment and Responsible Leadership. These values resonate strongly with me, as they align with my personal belief that engineering is not just about technical creativity but also about making ethical decisions that positively impact the world.
As a student, I am committed to ensuring that my work is accurate, thorough, and based on sound evidence, this is why the principal of Accuracy and Rigour is the principal that I agree with the most. This means checking calculations, validating assumptions, and staying up to date with the latest advancements in my field. In the future, I will apply this principle by rigorously testing designs and solutions to ensure they are safe, reliable, and effective.
To explore the topic of engineering ethics further, I found the following article quite interesting:
