Jarred’s Statement…

As a student engineer and IET member I understand how important ethics are in shaping how I work and make decisions. The Statement of Ethical Principles from the Royal Academy of Engineering (RAE) and the Engineering Council (EC) lays out key values like honesty, integrity, respect, responsibility and communication things that help maintain trust in engineering.

For me, accuracy and rigor are important be an engineer, I need to ensure that my work is precise, well-researched, and executed correctly. Mistakes in engineering can have serious consequences, so I strive to uphold high standards by double-checking my work and constantly improving my knowledge. The commitment to rigor helps build trust in my work and ensures that I contribute to being safe and effective. The IET’s Professionalism and Ethics in Engineering guidelines also reinforce these values, particularly in how engineers should maintain their skills and knowledge, exercise tasks to the best of there ability and act responsible to the ethical principles. IET Rules of Conduct outline specific responsibilities for engineers, such as adhering to ethical business practices and supporting colleagues. These rules provide a framework to ensure that engineers act with integrity and uphold their reputation.

I looked at Harvard Business School’s insights on why ethics are important in engineering. It discusses common ethical challenges engineers face today and highlights the importance of making responsible decisions to protect the public and the environment as well as being qualified and faithful for the work your doing. By following these ethical guidelines, I hope to grow into a responsible engineer who excels at their work but also considers the ethical impact.
