Personal Statement of Commitment to Ethical Principles

As a student member of the IET and an aspiring engineer, I recognise the importance of adhering to the highest of ethical standards. The joint Statement of Ethical Principles, issued by the Royal Academy of Engineering and the Engineering Council, provides a structure in which myself and other engineers can use as a guide to help push the sector to maintain the highest of standards throughout not only its work but, how we align our identity.

To align myself with the ethical principles set forth by the RAE and the EC, I will uphold the principles of honesty, integrity, respect for life, law, and the public good, accuracy and rigor and leadership and communication. In order to do this as both a current student and future engineer, I will make sure that I try my upmost to act in a trustworthy manner, ensuring that my work is lawful, act with care and promote equality, inclusion and diversity. In alignment with the guidance issued by the Institution of Engineering and Technology, I will ensure that I will create a workspace where ethical concerns can be openly discussed without any judgement of any kind, in which individuals do not feel that they cannot express situations that they or their colleagues may be facing, which is key to maintaining a transparent and trustworthy professional environment.

One valuable resource I have chosen is the article “Ethics in Engineering: Importance and Examples” from Harvard Business School Online. This article provides a comprehensive overview highlighting 7 key reasons for why there is so much importance about around ethics with explanations on how engineers who lead ethically can gain long term success.
