As IET student member, I know the importance of ethical principles in shaping my future professional duties. Engineering has a large impact on the environment and society at large, making a duty for any aspiring and professional engineer to Understand and practice to ethical standards.
The Royal Academy of Engineering (RAE) and Engineering Council (EC) Ethical Principles emphasize honesty, integrity, respect for life, law, the environment, public good, accuracy, leadership, and communication. These guide my actions as a student and will help to shape my professional career.
I commit to academic and professional integrity by avoiding deception, plagiarism, and conflicts of interest. I hold great respect for life, law, and the environment prioritizing safety in my actions. Making sure that my future in the industry is sustainable and complies with the regulations and i will speak out against bad and unethical engineering practices that harm society, correct and improve on these issues where I come across them.
I will keep my skills updated and ensure my work is thorough, evidence-based, and to a high quality. I will contribute to a culture of ethical responsibility starting now in my student projects and next year’s practical dissertation. As for now in our current mico mouse project, we are minimizing waste by reusing materials such as small already cut bits of wires and making the most out of all consumables such as solder and electricity in our testing and construction of the mouse. We use leadless solder so as to not add harmful substances into our process. We are aiming for as many recyclable parts in our mouse as possible, the plastic on the shell can be recycled, and some of our components can be reused such as the motors, wheels, and touch bars. We are respectful of other teams that are working on their projects within the same space. We prioritized safety when handling tools like soldering irons and glue guns. Effective communication helped our team work efficiently and respectfully.
