Within the IET, my team and I have a duty to possess professional integrity. In doing so we will obey the byelaws and rules of conduct set by the IET, these have been put in place for the interest of the public. My team would blow the whistle in this scenario, given that it has a probability to harm someone, this disobeys the byelaw 29, that states members must safeguard the public interest in matters of health and safety, and the rule of conduct 14, that states IET members but take reasonable care to limit danger of death, or any injury from their work. This is also because failure to raise a relevant concern may render myself or a team member liable to disciplinary under the rules of conduct. When blowing the whistle, it will be done appropriately, following the IET’s guidance to whistleblowing. The company should react with care, as one of the rules of conduct 10, also states that members must support colleagues that raise concerns in good faith. When blowing the whistle, I would raise the concern to my supervisor, making sure if it is overruled, they know the risks, from rule 8 that states the decision maker understands the risks. However, if the company does not treat this, then we would feel obligated to escalate this externally.
